R. Sammy by AnnPars R. Sammy by AnnPars
Another attempt at digital painting--I had a lot of fun this time :D! This is a picture of detective Baley and R. Sammy from Asimov's Caves of Steel, which I just finished, and which is possibly the most awesome book ever. Seriously, a detective and a robot fight crime! How can anything be more awesome than that? And ok, the robot Baley actually fights crime with--Daneel--is way better than poor Sammy here. I'll have to draw him too sometime :)

I just got done listening to an audio dramatization of that book. Your depiction of Sammy perfectly matches the vocal characterization they went with for that character, which made him sound extremely slow witted, like he should have been adding "duhh" to the start of every sentence.

Thank you! I'm glad my painting of him matched his voice :)

Lovely! You've really got Elijah's dark dour expression, as well as Sammy's oh-so-smiley smiley one (that always drove Elijah up the wall!).

Yes, you will definitely have to draw the fabulous Daneel as well!

'Poor Sammy' though IS rather adorable.

I dont think Asimov robots were so primitive. Maybe they was like "Sonny" from "I, robot" film (only difference between NS-5 and robots from books is what the primitive Asimov robots have static faces).

Yeah, I did exaggerate a bit--I wanted a noir detective look, so I went with robot design from that period. Artistic license :D

Some Daneel artwork would be great, and if you plan to continue drawing scenes from Asimov's robot saga, would you consider doing Gladia and Elijah's touchy-touchy scene from "The naked sun" (where Gladia takes off her glove and touches Elijah's face). I would totally love to see that scene portraited and I haven't found any art piece about it. That's a shame since it's an amazing scene. And I love the way you portraited Elijah, not a pretty face but a man in his fourties with that gloomy but intelligent look... totally as I imagine him, and as the books describes him!
Whatever you choose to do, keep up the good work! :)

Oooh, I hadn't even thought of doing the Gladia and Elija scene! That would be fun :). Drawing something with Daneel is up next on my list, but if I have time, I'll try to draw that!

Oh I'm so sorry! I think I just spoilered you! I just realized you may not have read The naked sun, and Deviantart doesn't have an edit or delete button for own comments! That really sucks!

I'm so embarrased! :s

You should definitely give one of his books a try! He's got interesting ideas, but he also has really great plots and characters!

That catches the spirit of the book, perfectly!

Love how you managed to convey that R. Sammy was meant to look as harmless as possible, but turned out creepy anyway. I can see why the robot-haters don't want these things on our streets!

Thank you :D! I'm glad Sammy came across as harmless-yet-creepy. I can totally understand that robot-haters wouldn't like them, but not gonna lie--I'd totally love having some robots around to do chores and just be generally awesome :D
